What is trauma?
Trauma is the lasting emotional and physical response that often results from living through a distressing event. Experiencing a traumatic event can harm a person’s sense of safety, sense of self, and ability to regulate emotions and navigate relationships. Long after the traumatic event occurs, people with trauma can often feel shame, helplessness, powerlessness, and intense fear.
What does it mean to be trauma-informed?
A trauma-informed approach means your counsellor understands, anticipates, and responds to the issues, expectations, and specific needs that a person who has been victimized may have. Trauma-informed counsellors seek to avoid retraumatizing or blaming clients for trying to manage their traumatic reactions.
Trauma-informed care takes into account how terrifying it can be to face trauma, recognizes that trauma can take many forms, and understands the impacts of historical and generational trauma.
Soul Haven recognizes that trauma is complex and offers survivors empathy and understanding. Counsellors believe in offering transparency, collaboration, empowerment, and choice.
